What it takes to have a successful podcast

Podmaster Podmaster

There are a lot of podcasts out there vying for attention, so how do you make yours stand out? The key is to be a podcasting master, or what one podcasting expert refers to as a “Podmaster”.

What does it take to be a Podmaster?

Podcasting has a low barrier to entry.

Pretty much anyone can start a podcast, and in many cases, they are doing it for free.

But this means there is more competition than ever to get engaged listeners who will buy into your content, and help lift your podcast to greater success.

So let's have a look at what it takes to become a 'podmaster'.

Care for how it sounds

Firstly, you need to have excellent audio quality.

This means investing in good equipment and making sure your recording space is free from background noise.

It's no longer acceptable to record your voice on your phone, or through your laptop's built-in microphone.

Listeners expect better quality, and they know you have plenty of competition if they want to find it!

An ability to sound interesting and engaging

Secondly, you need to be a great storyteller.

Your podcast should be engaging and entertaining, with each episode helping listeners escape into another world.

Plenty of podcasts start with an individual or team having an idea, getting excited, and then just beginning with the recording. This means they don't have proper structure or content guides in place.

As a result, listeners don't stick with them, and they fail to build audience.

You need to be able to grab your ideal listener's attention

Thirdly, you need to be able to communicate clearly and confidently.

Your podcast should sound professional, and your delivery should be on point.

Many don't last beyond a handful of episodes because they haven't given enough thought to how their content is going to pan out.

They quickly realise they didn't really know what they were doing, and so they give up.

Niching down is imperative

Finally, you need to choose a compelling theme.

Your podcast should be about something that people are passionate about and that will keep them coming back for more.

Starting up a new podcast that's been 'done to death' by hundreds of thousands of other podcasts is not a good idea if you want to grow quickly.

Hint - don't start a podcast where you're having a general chat with a business expert. Unless you have a marketing budget of millions, you're unlikely to compete for attention with the dozens of other podcasts that are already doing that successfully.

And, you need to know how to promote

If you can tick all of the above off your list, then you’re well on your way to podcasting success.

But don’t forget, even the best podcasts need to be promoted in order to attract attention and build an audience.

So, there's a lot to learn.

Thankfully, we've found a fantastic podcast that will be walking new and existing podcasters through a deep-dive of what it takes to have a successful podcast.

As a podcaster with more than twenty years of experience (the first in the UK to ever publish a podcast) Neal Veglio knows exactly what works.

As a consultant for many of the world's biggest brands including Travel Counsellors and Prohibition Partners, Neal has been helping steer podcasts and their hosts towards their dreams and goals.

He uses a combination of widely known best practices and decades of insider insight to help his clients be heard above the noise.
